can anyone please highlight for me any pros and cons of these 2 tripods -
trying to decide which one to go for. emailed red snapper sales but not got back to me yet. eg is the 4 section tpod as sturdy as the 3 section?

thanks

I believe they are "the same" stability wise - the legs seem very sturdy. The only con I can see is some people don't like the twist lock on the legs (not as convenient as the flip locks of, say, the 324.

I have the 4 section one as I can take it as hand luggage (just) when I travel abroad.

The 284 has more sections, so in theory, it is probably the less rigid of the two.....but I doubt you'd actually notice the difference between them. The main differences for me would be the folded weight.....the 284 is quite a bit smaller once packed away, but the extra sections mean it takes more time to set it up and pack it away.....

I have the 283 legs, but if I was buying again, I'd buy the 284's.....purely for the folded size!!

The more sections it has, then the more joints there are, and so stability is reduced (theoretically at least). Imagine having 1-section legs, it would be veeeerry stable, and also too cumbersome to move anywhere.

So the 4 section sacrifices a little sturdiness for a more compact package, and it'll also take a little longer to extend to full height. Whether you'll notice this in the real world is another matter though!

Personally I'll be going for the 4 section, as portability is more important to me, but if may be completely different for you!

Id like to point out that they are both the same weight so carrying wise id go for the 3 section

I went for the 283 purely because of the theoretical advantage in rigidity. It is quite large when folded but does come with a soft case which has a very good cushioned strap. I find mine comfortable to carry over the shoulder. I think that it would be too large to attach to a rucksack. If you intend to carry it like that you'd probably be better off with the 284.

Another point to consider is the head. I bought mine with a ballhead but replaced it with a 3 way head after a few months use. Personally I get on with the 3 way head much better because I like the ability to make minor adjustments to a single plane at a time.

^ I know what you mean about ball heads, I'm saving for a Manfrotto 405 geared head, after using one the other month, the precision is superb, awesome for landscape or anything you want super smooth single plane adjustment..

I've got the RS324 + RSH12 , the RS324 is definitely overkill, it's rated at 12Kg and you need to be a giant to max it out without even raising the column..
