We've lived in the same house now for nearly 25 years and in the past I've driven over 60 miles to photograph Red Kites in flight.

However, twice over the weekend, a pair have been circling gracefully high over our house and local woodland.

We do live on the edge of a large mixed species woodland but we have never had Red Kites moving into the area before.

I am hoping they will stay but I've no idea why they have suddenly appeared or whether they will become local residents.

Note - must have camera ready at all times now.

I've seen them all over Sussex. My record is five together over the South Downs near Arundel, but usually they're alone. Will be interesting to see if they start breeding around here, it's certainly a suitable habitat.

May be young birds seeking territory of their own, they seem to be doing fairly well around the country.

Great isn't it :D habitat coming back and a great deal of work on various breeding/catch and release programs, my son and I saw two this morning being harassed by some crows over fields on the outskirts of Andover.

A success story means population growth. Around here up until recently they could be seen in numbers only in Watlington where I believe they were re-introducted but I recently counted over 20 wheeling overhead from my flat and they are now common in Wallingford and towards Reading and Oxford.

Thanks for the comments everyone - here's hoping they are here to stay then.

We do have lots of single track roads weaving through the countryside with lots of road kill - so a regular and ideal food source for them perhaps?

And the senseless, needless persecution has started up here already.

I live at Benson between Watlington and Wallingford.

We have a red kite 'problem' where I work! Beautiful birds don't mix well with aircraft and local villagers leave food out for them. We can have up to 20 circling over the airfield making our bird scaring mans job a nightmare!

I'd say the reintroduction has gone much better than expected!!!

Enjoy them, they are amazing to watch.

I can't remember where it was but there was a McDonalds that had become a firm favourite.

They must be the only things that do favour a McDonalds then Phil :D

They've been breeding in Pulborough for a while now, not that far from Arundel
