This morning we travelled from Lampeter,mid-Wales, where we're on holiday, to a nearby wetlands reserve to see what it's like before visiting for a day. It's called Cors Caron. The roads are narrow with many bends. As we approached a left-hand bend , on the offside there was a Red Kite down on the road pecking at a dead squirrel which appeared to have been, very recently, killed. ie.. .road kill. Just then a van came round the bend towards us and the Red Kite took off. It only had a couple of seconds ..ie about 15m to 'escape'. We drove on and I asked my wife to turn round and go back because I wanted to throw the squirrel over into the field where the Red Kite would be able eat it in safety. So..we made a turn as soon as possible. Not many places to do it. We found a road on our nearside and turned there. When we neared the bend we slowed down and went round slowly just in time to see the Red Kite lifting off the road clutching the squirrel in it's talons. We were just metres from it. What a sight. I was so pleased to see it safely get away from the road and with its lunch...lol..
