I'm looking to photoraph some Red Grouse over the winter. Dos anybody know any good spots nearish to me (Cardiff) that I could go? I've heard there are plces in Blaenavon that are good. Where's the best plce to park and walk to?

You want to get yourself up to the area around 'Keepers Pond', about a mile north of Blaenavon. It was a well known grouse moor many moons ago and there are probably still a few around there. I remember seeing them up there in the '60s and '70s. Whether you'll be lucky enough to stumble across them today is a different matter. There's a car park right next to the southern end of the pond. OS map reference SO 254/107. It's shown as Pen-ffordd-goch pond on maps but locals know it better as 'keepers'.

Go up to Blorenge, North from Blaenavon on the b4246 ( the Abergavenny rd) , you then need to turn right just before keepers pond, continue along the narrow road until you get to 'foxhunter's carpark ( opposite a radio station? if memory serves me right). Park up and walk North to the trigg point, they are usually anywhere between the carpark and the point. Last year there was one chap using a tape recording of them and he had some success with it, I had no tape and only saw them from a distance. A baghide or similar will also help.Good luck.

I went up there yesterday. Saw a few but couldn't get any photos. At least i know they're there. Going to do another trip in the new year.
