Red Eye reduction , Alter the human !

Today I had a new camera a Full Frame mirrorless Nikon for £3 ! With all the excitement I decided to look up a set of instructions, When I got to Red eye reduction I learnt something I never knew which was the fact that this is done by doing a pre flash before the main flash which shrinks the pupil because of the bright flash. So in affect the camera is altering the human state in order to stop/reduce the red eye. I had always thought ( but not really hard, it hurts too much) that this was all done by some trickery inside the camera ! ( I know it is now) You learn something new everyday !
