Red Arrows Mid Air Collision 23.3.2010

any idea what move they were doing at the time?

If its the pair im guessing it was the one where they cross each other in front of the crowd like this?

Just glad that they are both ok. Bit miffed that they had to do it over Greece and not Scampton. :D

They only left on Saturday. I wish both pilots and the whole team well. Glad that they both get to see their families again.
It does show how hard that they push themselves though. I always listen to them on the scanner whilst shooting them and you can hear how determined this team is to get it right for the fans.
I'm also glad Red 3 wasn't involved. She has earned her place in the team and deserves respect for that. :clap:
Its a long time until they come home now. (May 25th)

Glad both are (relatively - given the alternative) ok - even though one of the pilots appears to have broken legs / dislocated shoulder depending on what you read.

This however, cracks me up..... copied from aol news....

Given that he ejected, hardly a f***ing surprise is it? going to need a tad more than T-cut and gaffer tape.

good reply by mr shore and i to am glad that flt lt mike ling has only minor injures and for kirsty (lady pilot ) it was not her involved she has worked bloody hard to get where she is:)
 
This accident could have happened to any one of them, they are the best aerobatic display team in the world and work to the smallest tollerances up there, I for one wish the pilot a full and speedy recovery and will applaud as loud as possible at Waddington this year
 
Swift are definately up there. The blue angels and the Thunderbirds are superb and work with MUCH tighter formations. Then there is always the Iron Eagle team. Technically VERY difficult precision flying. Etc etc etc
 
Not the female pilot (Red 3).

It was Reds 6 & 7 (synchro pair).

The Italian Frecce Tricolori and the French Patrouille de France aren't bad either.
 
Wonder what will happen to the Reds display season.
I don't think they have spare pilots due to the intricate nature of learning to fly individual positions.
Saw a pic of the pilot who ejected being stretched. He appeared to have lacerations all the way down his right arm.
 
Last year at waddo one Red arrow flew in and landed 1 hr before the other 9 turned up, It may have been a spare plane as the pilot was dressed in a green suit of it could be a spare pilot/plane......cheesy or kevshore would probably know

Yes, Peter, I understand that they take along a spare Hawk.
After yesterday one is wrecked another has damage.

Theres plenty of time before the season starts so hopefully we should see them flying this year........
 
Would all depend on the piltot injurys, heard on the report its his shoulder, would depend on what his done to to. Doubt the cuts would stop him, if it was a seperation he'd most likely be fly soon, is dislocated it would take longer to heal fully, but with daily physio its possible to up in the air very quickly.


As for the planes, that wouldnt be an issue i wouldnt have thought, theres plenty around they could nick and paint in red.
 
The team has a total of 13 aircraft. I've seen 11 fly at onetime. Never all of them. I would think that the team will commence with training once they find out what has happened/caused it.
Knowing how professional these guys are, I would think once they are given the go ahead to get back on with it, they will do their best to get back on track.
I suppose you could say that it was lucky that it happened so early in their training over there. They only left on saturday!
They are/were due back on May 25th. Hopefully that will still happen.

Since the RAF video all practice and display flights for debriefing purposes, where's the footage?
 
There's some very poor quality mobile phone footage around, but don't bother as it really is crap!

What a sad day for the Reds.
But great news nobody was seriously injured or killed.

I took this shot at RAF Valley last year. The front undercarrige hydraulics were leaking and spewing oil onto the Red following.

IIRC, it was the Synchro pair that collided.
