Recovering damaged jpegs

I have managed to recover a load of photos from a damaged SD card, but many of the files are themselves damaged. Typically the thumbnail is ok but the full image displays with the bottom part of it grey or discoloured. A Google search reveals a few software tools that claim to be able to recover such files, some of them providing a free check to see if the image can be recovered but then requiring you to buy the product before you can save the result. I won't mind paying if the product works (though I would prefer to find a free one) - but before doing so, does anyone here have any recommendations ?
