for anyone interested in video and sound especially this is what I know about using this kind of unit. I happen to have it on my Panasonic HC-X1500 with an Azden SMX-30V microphone.

build cost (new) as shown around £1800 including camcorder -handle with mixer unit- xlr cable - memory cards

To start with this microphone is 2 in 1. Long directional at the front and stereo microphone on the top. Why I chose this microphone is because it is so versatile ,being able to dial in whichever I want or both together. Sound quality wants for nothing and has a detachable audio cable if one get damaged.

Ok on to the rest of what is shown above. The sound control unit Panasonic VW-=HU1 mixer built into the handle.
Interesting bit of kit . Normally if just using a stereo or directional microphone all it needs is a single XLR cable. The channel control is from Imput 1 only and if the microphone doesn't have its own power set to MIC. If has its own power set to 48v phantom power.

However the Azden Microphone having stereo and directional sound, then I use a 3 pole connector which uses a split XLR cable (red and black below the microphone holder). Now input 1 and input 2 on the control unit are used. One advantage now is I can control both the stereo and directional microphone on the Azden individually, as you would using 2 individual microphones. Looking at the camcorder screen it is so easy to check the balance via the indication bars, and adjust using dials for each channel.

Having used camcorders for the last 13/14 years and not all the same make this model and setup is the best I have come across so far. There is enough information on Youtube so no need for me to repeat on here

Please note Below I have not got or even tried the one for a camera, it is up to you if you decide to get one or not

There is a the same unit to fit on cameras wanting to video , the Panasonic DMW-XLR1 (£365) is may be the answer to pick up the onboard microphones instead with an XLR cable.
