Hi All

I'm after some advise for a new lens, looking at replacing the focal length offered by the Canon 400d kit lens with something a lot better. Looking at spending no more then £300 so hoping to get something decent. Hoping to get some thing that has IS but not sure if thats asking to much for my budget? Any recommendations would be great :D

Cheers
Alex

I got a lot of use out of my 55-250mm IS lens on my 400D before I upgraded to a 70 - 200 2.8 IS.

You can pick them up ridiculously cheaply as well.

already have a 55 - 200 lens so looking to start from 17mm if possible.

I think the extra £30 might be to much of a stretch (getting my request in with the missus for my crimbo present ;) )

Incidentally I have one for sale if you are interested? :)

And exactly how would a 55-250 would replace the focal length of a 400D kit lens?

Oh I see, you have one for sale, that's how :suspect:

@ tazy7 - I honestly think it would be worth saving the extra for. You may even find one 2nd hand, there have been some going on here well within your budget recently iirc, people rate it alongside the 17-55 f2.8 which is twice the cost of the Tamron :)

Since you don't say that it needs to have a massive aperture...
The 18-55 IS Kit Lens that comes with the 450D/1000D is supposed to be miles better than the non-IS version that come with the 400D.
You can pick these up for ~£70 IIRC.

It's a marginal upgrade at best. It's IQ is better but it pales in comparison to a 17-55 and so I cannot see it being anywhere near a Tam 17-50 or similar.

can reccomend the Tamron 17-35 or 17-50 obviously the 17-50 offers more range but the optics are great on either, neither have IS, but both are light if not get yourself a monopod if you really need it

used 17-40 f4l ?

Not sure you'll get that 2nd hand for £300, more like £400+

What about the 28-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS USM, nothing special, but solid performer
2nd hand, less than £300, or a sigma 24-70mm f2.8 2nd hand, closer to the £300, or as suggested, the tamron 17-50mm f2.8

thanks for the suggestions guys, it looks like i need to find somewhere to look and play with the tamron. From what ive read online seems to cover what i want, time to convince the missus that £300 is how much she wants to spend on me for christmas and she doesnt want a £300 gift in return

keep my eyes open for a 2nd hand one possibly - advantage is santa might come to me a bit earlier :naughty:

there is a 2nd hand 17-50 tamron on the forums here for sale I think
around £250 so within budget

avoid, I think, the 17-85 IS although it looks good on paper
the 28-135 IS is better, but might be too narrow for you on a 400D.
also there is a sigma 17-70 I think, which isn't f2.8 but had a popular following
