Got a lot of days to take off work before end of the year, thinking a little trip, I think live in Herefordshire so thinking drive up to York for a night, then Edinburgh for 3 nights, round Scotland a bit perhaps stay somewhere with a nice view, down to Lake District for a couple of nights and then drive home. Total 7 - 8 days.

Without spreading myself too thin, I will look into Scotland separately but for this thread, anyone got any tips on York/Lake District?

Re Covid restrictions - I have both shots and will be travelling alone by my own car and don't mind wearing mask.

There's a nice Best Western across the road from the Minster, but all my real recommendations for York are for pubs. If you like craft beer, I can give you a list.

If you don't, we have nothing to discuss ;)

We (wifey and me) have stayed in/near York a couple of times. My favourite hotel is Burn Hall (https://www.burnhallhotelyork.com/), it's a little outside of York but has the benefit of having a bird of prey centre in the grounds :). As Phil has said there is a Best Western close to the Minster but I remember that parking can be an issue there. Places to visit in York are (depending on your interests) the National Railway Museum, York Minster and The Shambles. Last time we were there we took a full day guided tour of the Dales which was good if you are into landscapes. The Yorvik Viking Centre gets lots of publicity but I was personally a bit underwhelmed by the experience. There are lots of National Trust houses and gardens close by too.

We visited The Lake District a few years ago but were stayed near Carnforth. I'm not much into landscape photography so we spent most of our time visiting NT properties. Places we enjoyed were Lake Windermere (took a boat trip) and the South Lakes Safari Zoo. My wife is disabled so it really limited the places we could get to in the Lakes but it really was a lovely place and we plan to revisit next year.

Hope that helps :)
