Recommendations for a cataloguing tool - HEIC & NAS

So I'm after a cataloguing/review/import tool, with a few hard requirements:
  • Supports a NAS for the catalogue, originals in folders year/month/day
  • Local thumbnails or cache would be nice, I don't want to manage it too much though. Sidecar metadata preferred but database ok.
  • MacOS
  • Proper HIF/HEIC support (from Sony)
I have other preferences but TBH these are the tricky ones. I'd prefer to pay one off, but might consider subscription. I've no need to pay for yet more cloud storage providers though.

Any suggestions? I have been using ON1 Photoraw but it's got weird rotation issues with portrait .HIFs.

I used to use Lightroom 6, the move to subscription plus all the stuff that adobe wants to keep running, and an adobe data leak pushed me to ON1.

Maybe I should revisit, I'd assume they support HEIC correctly... but not sure? Specifically handling portrait rotations correctly.

Do they allow a regular folder structure of unmodified originals? I know I could probably read the manual and find out, but maybe someone knows?

They support HEIC
They do allow regular folder structures.

You can download the trial. You’ll be looking for Lightroom Classic.

You can usually pick up a 1 year subscription to LR on Amazon 2-3 times a year for around £80

Ah that's a good tip, a more palatable price.

Might have to try it out and see how I get on then. I don't tend to edit much though, beyond simple crops, curve tweaks/contrast etc, so can't help but feel with LR I pay for a lot more than I need.

My workflow is to import, cull/select, then from selections move them into Apple Photos from whence (by various means) they end up on my devices/backups etc.

If a program can work with a year/month/day/photo.whatever archive then I can import direct to my NAS/backups and avoid duplications from Apple Photos ending up there.

Apparently, even if you don't renew the subscription, the cataloguing side of Lr continues to function. I don't know if this would be the case if you tried the free trial but then did not go ahead with the subscription. Might be worth a try.

You’re quite right.

@the_accidental if you download the LR trial you can use the catalog for free even after the trial expires.

You won’t be able to edit or use the maps feature but I think you can print too
