I used the trial version of DxO Optics 5.3.5 and it was really good. However, it came to an end and it's quite expensive to get the software. So, I thought i'll just ask the you, the experts whether you have any recommendation on any good & cheap/free photo editing software.

Thanks

Alvin

Define cheap!

The current version of Adobe Photoshop Elements is only £49.99 at CameraWorld at the moment (Windows version) and IMO that's a bargain.

It really depends what you want that software to do, basic editing, then look at free software like picasa or gimp

If you want something with abit more clout then go for Photoshop Elements or Paintshop Pro.

If you are very serious about digital manipulation of images, digital art then something like Photoshop CS4 is needed. Alot of people buy Photoshop (full version), and barely use it because it a very powerful tool that can be used for much more than editing and saving digital images. Alot of money on something that get used at about 10% of its capabilities and its also very expensive.

Thanks for all the comments.

I did try Gimp and the only problem is I can't edit photos from RAW. Photoshop might be an option.

Full monty Photoshop is the real answer. But not cheap and, due to its complexity and huge scope of operation, not easy to use. But it's a fantastic piece of software.

I used DXO for a while. I think the last version I used was 4

I found that it would oversharpen the images and also bloated the file size.
I was finding that from an original 10Mb RAW file I was ending up with a 30Mb DNG file. I contacted them about it and it apparently had to do with the way they converted the file to keep as much information as possible.

For those two reasons I stopped using it and went for Lightroom and Photoshop
