Recommend me a tripod!

Hi all,

Just bought a new Canon 1200D and a Tamron 70-300mm lens. I need a tripod which will support these, rather lightweight and not too bulky. Not so much a budget, but wouldn't be used too often. Looking at taking it to Chester Zoo and hopefully use it for landscapes and to film time-lapses.

Any suggestions would be great, been looking at Velbon DF-61 but is this too cheap?

My advice is not to scrimp, buy cheap buy twice I've found. I bought a similar priced one to start and it was infuriating as the head would always move a bit when you tightened the locks so you almost had to 'guess' where your frame would end up. Redsnapper do some tripods that fit neatly between the budget and quality range imo.

It all comes down to budget vs cost. Carbon Fibre ones tend to be preferable due to the lighter weight and less vibration, but it comes at a price. Just go for the best you can within your budget. Make sure it's tall enough for you, and has features that you want such as low level shooting. 3-section is more preferable in terms of stability, but 4 and 5-section are more compact and therefore more portable.

I probably wouldn't recommend taking a tripod to Chester zoo as it gets very busy. A Monopod would be better (although obviously not for timelapse and landscapes)

Agreed, although I don't tend to use a monopod either for wildlife parks just handheld, even with the D750 and 150-600mm.
