Morning folks

I'm looking for a decent monopod, i'm going to a TP meet in a few weeks at Chester Zoo and think that my tripod would be too big and get in the way so i'm looking for something a little more compact.

I dont have a budget as of yet, but dont know what I'm really looking at! One with a strap would be nice?

Thanking you :)

I use a Mafrotto 680B with a 484RC2 ball head, it uses the same quick release plate as my tripod; so that stays on the camera all the time. The monopod has a strap fitting, I never use a neck strap on my camera; so I use the Nikon one that came with my D70 on the monopod. This setup is really stable; even when the monopod is closed it makes a great handle for your left hand to steady everything whilst shooting. Not sure of the price these days I've had it for about 3 years now, wouldn't change it.

Manfrotto 685B. Not the shortest when folded, but there's no fiddling about with clips or locks to extend and close it. Just squeeze the trigger on the pistol grip with your foot on the plate on the bottom and pull it up to any height you like. Squeeze the trigger again to fold it.... total one - handed operation. I'd go for the little pan/tilt head for it which is only about 14 quid.

:agree: ... anything Manfrotto but the one CT recommends is a great bit of kit ...

Which model pan/tilt head?

I wish Manfrotto or someone produced a case for it!

It says Manfrotto #234 on the head. I think on the WE site it's advertised to go with the tripod. I didn't bother with one at first- mistake! Obviously you can lean the pod to a fair degree if you need too, but there comes a point at which it gets silly. With the head you can keep the pod upright and tilt the camera down or up if you need to.

I wouldn't bother with a case - its just something else to keep packing and unpacking. Rig up some sort of sling if you need to, but I tend to just carry mine in my hand - it does have a wrist strap and it's handy for deterring footpads, vagrants and would-be assassins. ;)

I bought a very expensive case for my Gitzo tripod and I wish I hadn't bothered - just more clutter.

Thanks for that on head. Can't find it yet on WE site. Would like to order it if I can.

No it looks like the same one with a QR plate which I wouldn't bother with and it's dearer.

I think it's this one..

manfrotto 676b here with a qr head on.

Light enough to carry, tall enough to use and strong enough to floor a thieving chav scum bag if needed :D

I have the Manfrotto 680 (£33 IIRC) +234RC (£25) head which I bought at Digital Depot in Stevenage the other week. I chose it because it collapsed smaller than the others of comprable size / cost. You are welcome to pop down the road to have a look at it if you like (PM me) Tuesday's best as I am in Stevenage again on Business on Wednesday (back Thursday) so if you wanted I could pick one up for you whilst I'm there to save postage

Just the info' I was going to do a search on....:D

Thanks TPer's.....
