I want to buy a monopod as my tripod just gets in the way sometimes.

Can anyone recommend something relitively cheap (not nasty cheap).

Do they have different heads or just a basic screw in???

Thanks

I have the manfrotto 679B and swear by it. It has a clever two part screw on top which you can put your camera straight onto (3/8" part) and also a tripod head (1/4" part) which is very useful, saves buying an adaptor!

The 1/4" part is like an extra bit around the 3/8" bit and it is spring loaded so if you fit your camera or a monopod head, the 1/4" bit gets pushed down. Very nice idea ;)

I have the 681B & highly recommend it, very light too - would need a head to go with it though as it doesn't come as standard with one

Another vote for the 681B and 234RC head, super sturdy, well built, should last a lifetime, and great for beating chavs around the head with too :-)

I cant quite understand monopods....... surely they can lean to the left/right/front or back when the camera is attached........therefore creating movement?

i use a manfrotto 676 monopod with a QR plate fixing on the top.

Small, light and sturdy and i can swap my camera from tripod to monopod as they both take the same plate.

Quite right, the movement is what gives great flexibility when moving the camera around but when you decide to stop, the monopod and your own 2 legs form a kind of tripod that's much more stable than handholding alone could ever be, guess it's one of those things that untill you try it (especially with a long lens), that doesn't seem to add up.
