There are a few books on portrait lighting but you would probably be better learning how to use light to light a variety of tems and use that knowledge to light each subject in the way that best suits them and/or what you want to portray.
Probably the best book to learn lighting techniques is, "light, science & magic", but this does not deal soley with either portraiture or studio flash.
One you have learnt how to light various objects with different light sources/modifiers then you should look at other's portraits and see how they were lit, examine artists portraits and see how they have interpreted the lighting and then using your new found knowledge and experience try to develop your own style.
Or you could just blow the BG to white and use a large softbox as a keylight and become like all the other sheep doing the same boring thing
