Hi folks

Quite fancy using the 85f1.4 a bit more in the studio but will need an nd filter for the lens. I reckon 0.9 should do it.

Any recommendations for a 77mm thread. Don't want to spend a bomb!

In the various testing that I've done, I can't see any difference between the various brands and price points, other than that the really cheap ones aren't always quite as dense as they claim to be.
0.9 is ideal for most people, most of the time.

I've tried a couple of shots without a filter with the Yongnuo yn622's on a single smartflash 1 (ss around 1/400) at f1.4 but it wasn't ideal.

I've seen an srb one for 28 quid which I'll take a punt on.

Thanks again

At f/1.4, the modelling lights are usually bright enough.

Didn't even think of this....

Just leave them on and turn the triggers off?

Cheers

Yes. A decent modelling light on full in a typical softbox at 1m will give you something like 1/125-250sec at f/1.4, ISO400

Not sure the smartflash 1 has variable modelling. I do have an ultrapro 300 which I've not used in a while though!

Don't need variable modelling light, you'll want it flat out. That will also keep the colour more consistent if you have more than one light.

Edit: it's not an ideal technique, but I used it a few times - mainly out of laziness. ND filter is better, especially if you can't get the room/studio fairly well darkened. Personally, I'd go for a two-stops ND - gives you a bit more scope and might have other uses. Viewfinder starts to get a bit dim with three stops, and four stops is quite an impediment.

Will definitely try that next time then. The smartflash on min settings with a few workarounds (ss/distance) was nearly ok but a bit limiting!
