Hello

I am looking for a softbox to use with my 430exii, I have a stand and triggers so just need adapter and the actual box.

I was looking at the Lastolite Ezybox kit but surely there has to cheaper alternative that doesnt cost this much.

I am a firm believer that you get what you pay for but I know it also pays to shop around!.

Any advice would be really appreciated.

Thanks

:)

Someone suggested Elemental to me earlier, they're darn site cheaper. Lencarta are also cheaper and I've just ordered a 90x60cm profold from them for £90 less than I would have paid for the equivalent Lastolite.

I have a lastolite one and one from amazon.
With the lastolite one you'll need to buy a tilt head for it.

The cheaper one comes with a ball head and the bracket is made from metal rather than plastic, like the lastolite.

The unbranded one is as good as the lastolite and is as well constructed. Only complaint is that the bag for carrying it is a bit too small on the unbranded one.

Stay absolutely well away from all things Elemental. There is no other softbox I've ever purchased that is more shoddily made. When I wasn't earning as much and price was the deciding factor in a softbox, I opted for Elemental several times, and not once was I pleasantly surprised. I spoke with the owner and he lied to my ear telling me that they were good for a couple of years and as even went as far as claiming his lights and boxes were better than Alienbees!

Nevertheless, I had an Elemental softbox that fell apart after the second use. The first use the grip ripped from its stitching, and the second time I put it up a pole went straight through the lining. They're just awful.

I started off with Interfit, and now stick with Profoto and Calumet. For the money, Calumet's Nova series are cheap, but deceptively high quality, and even the carry bag is decent. They also have a slightly higher priced Illuma series which is also excellent.

The upshot about Calumet is that their speedrings are universal, so when you come to upgrade your lights to a different manufacturer, you just spend £20 on a new adaptor and you stick it straight on the speedriing and it's converted. You don't even have to take the box down.

Also, I've just written all of that without noticing you needed something for your 430ii. Which renders everything I said meaningless! :)

That said, Calumet do a few decent pop up softboxes for speedlights.
