My dads birthday is coming up and I want to get him a camera. Looking at either a bridge or a micro 4/3, but unsure what to go for.

Size wise, they are pretty similar. The main differences that I can see are,

Bridge - Simple, one lens, everything you need right out the box.

Micro 4/3 - Better IQ, choice of lenses. But limited to kit lens focal lens until such time that additional lenses can be purchased.

Personally, I would naturally go for a micro 4/3 system, but I may be looking at it from a different stand point than my dad.

My budget is £300. This brings in the argument between a mid to high-ish end bridge compared to a entry level micro 4/3 system, in which case would a bridge be better?

Suggestions very much welcome!

Have a read through the Panasonic 4/3 gf thread... floating around in this bit of the forum :)

I got one (GF3) for the wife and she likes it (apart from the built in flash). Came with intelli iso which produced better pics than me - although that ain't too hard :D

Best to get your dad to a store and handle some, see which he might prefer...

Micro 4/3 series you can also get adapters for and get leica or other lenses on them (manual only I guess).

For bridge, you'll want to check iq on pic and focus speed. I say the latter as my dad got a pretty decent fuji (I think) bridge, and although light and easy to use, focus speed was slow and noisy...

Good hunting!

Bass, have a look at Tesco,s i bought a Fuji s4020 (bridge) last week for a knockdown price of £128.00 last week

Cheers guys. The GX1 looks great, but a bit more than what I can afford.
The GF3 looks a good bet, only downside I can immediately see is the lack of hotshoe, but I doubt will be an issue.

Try and find the GX1 second hand? Maybe an EP2+kit? The EP2 is a lot cheaper than the GX1/EP3 while still being a brilliant little stills camera!

Just get a little Ixus or something similar. Great pictures and he can take it absolutely everywhere.

You'll also have at least £100 left over.

Panasonic TZ30 it's quite good a colleague of mine got one it's amazing, it's even sharp :) It's wide and it has good zoom at the same time.
