Yes
I want to get a new cheap (as I don't use them much) flash for my camera.

I have a Canon 40d & 50d, and I have a Yongnuo flash, but I was looking for something that is not a "dumb flash" like the yongnuo is

I've seen a few canon speedlites go for about £40 secondhand, but want to make sure it will be auto / compatible with my camera and not dumb like the yongnuo.

Think I will pop the yongnuo on a stand with a trigger and use it that way.

The Canon flashes at that price are generally old so not compatible, as above, there are plenty of ETTL bargains to be had. Try Yongnuo or Neewer, or Godox

another to consider is the pixel king mago speedlight

i bought one of these about 12 months ago for £65 there were a few teething problems with it but firmware upgrades has resolved them
you don't hear much about these for some reason but for the price there very good, comparing it to my canon 600 ex in actual use there's not a great deal in it although the 600 ex is more consistent it's also considerably more expensive
the build quality is good and it has all the usual features found on the 600 ex
i don't know how it stands up to the other 3rd party speedlights but i think it's worth checking out along with the others
