As you may of see the HELP-lowlight thread i am now intrested in geting my self a flash as i am now going to be imvolved more in the school magazine and taking photos of people i am guessing a flash will help.

so can you reccommend me one, i want a reasobale one which will do well and i shouldn't have to upgrade for a while and is tehre anythings else i may need.

I already have a 50mm f1.8 but is there anything else that jumps to mind.

thanks

Mark

You will obviously get what you pay for as usual but the 580EX models are amazing if you can afford one & will use the extra power. Failing that, the 430EX is an excellent flash too & is available at very reasonable prices at the moment - there is also the Sigma route to look at if you don't want to spend out too much

Edit: Get yourself a diffuser too to soften the harshness of the flash lighting

Hi thanks for your reply

how do the sigma compare to the canon 430ex.

and is there anything worng with buying a second hand flash

thanks

I find it always better to go for the dedicated accessories for my camera (ie. Canon ones) as it eliminates any compatibility issues that you may get with other brands (I have never had any problem with Sigma though to be honest)
I would try to save up enough to afford the 430EX but it's all personal preference really. I do know that the Sigma EF500 does not have the custom functions of the 430EX but is a tad more powerful light wise (not 100% sure on that one though?) There are people on here that do use the Sigma flashes that will give you better advice than I can though as I have only used the Canon flashes

I don't think that it's really a problem buying second hand (my flash is) as long as you are careful who you buy from (I got mine from Monkeydave on the forums). You could always put an advert in the "Wanted" section of the forum & see if anyone has one for sale

I got a Sigma EF 500 Super. Its OK, but the instruction manual was translated into English by a gibbon who skipped their Japanese and English classes. However I was on a budget.

If I was going to do so again, I'd go for a Canon offering, or at least download the instructions in a pdf and see if they were understandable.

No harm buying secondhand providing you know the risks. Buyer beware and all that. Most people look after their kit, but everything has a finite life.

The 420ex can be bought on ebay for half the price of a new 430ex (mine was £75, with a diffuser). You lose a bit of functionality but it's ideal if you're on a tight budget. The 380ex is a touch cheaper but less powerful.

Go with the 580EX if you can, you might soon outgrow the 420/430 series even though they are very capable flashes.

Personally I would be very wary of buying 2nd hand even if they appear spotless.

It could last for years - it could bomb out after a week:eek:

HTH!

hi thanks, so a 430ex.

what about metz flashes and does anyone know how much kerso is for a 430ex

I have a 580EX and love it, have not used any other flashes but I have no complaints about the 580EX, good weight and size too. I managed to get one for a good price 2nd hand.

As said, also get yourself a diffuser like the Gary Fong's Lightsphere, there's a cheaper imitation on the bay called 'lambency'.
