I want to file down a neg holder to do rebate prints, I have some small, fine files which will do the trick but anyone that's done this want to offer words of wisdom?

Just do it, I used to print my 6x6 with the rebate. the hole doesn't have to be that accurate as you use you easel to get it all square.
Easier to do it with a big file.

Aaargh easels!

I have no idea how to work the ones that the darkroom I use has!

The ones I learned on had the frame that lifts up and at top left of the base there's slotts cut and you put a plate in to butt the paper up against, then the left and top margin are set by the frame that doesn't move, right and bottom you move the blades to set.

Ones in the darkroom I use now have all 4 blades moving, am I meant to just set the blades for the size of image then slap the paper in and trim it after?

Found some images, ones I know how to use:

Ones I don't know how to use:

Shouldn't be a problem filing out the negative holder, but if its metal then finish off with some emery paper to remove any burrs and after paint any bare edges with a couple of thin coats of matt black paint. A small pot of Humbrol Enamel will suffice.

The reason for painting any bare shiny edges to to prevent the light being reflected and reducing the contrast.

Yeah I was thinking it'd be a tricky job *** I'd have to get it realy nice n neat but seems like it'll be easier to just enlarge the opening as neatly as aI can and learn how to use this easel to make things neat.

Neg holder filed sanded and painted this morning, just need to book a darkroom slot and try get my head round the easel now!

I might have filed too far, the perforations are slightly visible now and I'm worried this will mean light leakage.
