I was posting on here a few months back as a new photographer, was really struggling with ps.
had to take a few months out due to illness which is now at last all cleared up, but i seem to have took abig step backwards in ps and just cant get my head round it again

here is some pics i took recently and had a play with but as you can see they really are not to good so any help would be greatly appreciated

would it help to put originals on so someone can tell what i should have done

Hi

I note your originals and the PP'ing you have done and that you say you are unhappy with the PP'ing............................but the question is ~ what are you trying to achieve with the PP'ing that you posted and as such why are you not happy with the results shown???

For what it is worth ~ #1 looks like were trying for an old film look #2 looks like an attempt at cross processing as it was done in the days of film and #3 no idea on what you were trying to get but other than maybe a curves adjustment to tone down the highlights a tad it seems to be a nice baby headshot portrait with simply catchlights in the eyes.

Hi box brownie and thanks for the reply

yes your correct with 1 and 2 and number 3 i wasnt really trying for a certain look i was just trying to improve the picture.

number 1 i like the old film style pics andthought i would try it out to see how i got on, just it doesnt look right to me, but i dont really know why.

They really should ban me from the processing section; this won't be helpful:

What's wrong with your originals is the flat lighting. Trying to 'create' something in PP to fix something that needed care at the taking stage isn't the best way of dealing with this.

Shadows create interest by revealing form. The flat natural light in the first image, and the on camera flash on the next 2 create no useful shadows.

I'll add, they're not awful pictures, but they could all be improved with better light.

thanks Phil

i take on board what your saying and i will next time try and think about how i take the picture, dont know why but i thought using the flash outside was right, i must have not read something correctly.
can i ask, how would i improve light out side without a flash?

thanks Phil

It's not a 'right' or 'wrong' issue. But on camera flash as key light will produce flat light, if you're mixing the ambient with flash, use the ambient as key and fill with the flash, you'll get some definition from the key light shadows. Wrong section, but I recommend 'The speedlighters handbook' by Syl Arena, meanwhile, someone talented will be able to do something worthwhile with Photoshop for you.

Phil i appreciate your reply even though it is in a foreign language to me llol

Then the simplest advice is to get the book :)

To photograph is to 'draw with light', so it'll help you no end to learn a little about how light works.
