took some pics yesterday and everything was fine.

looked at them on the laptop played around with them.

put the card back in the camera and then went to bed.

got up this morn and checked the photos one came up them when i scrolled to the next one it read 'card error' turned camera off and started again but no luck.

deleted the pics and everything fine.

do you know what caused this???

im just glad it didnt hapen on sat when i did a wedding.:shrug: :shrug:
 
I'm afraid I have no idea! It's happened a few times to me - I just delete the pic and it's alright again :shrug: Really annoying though - luckily for me i've never had to delete any good ones.

I think sometimes taking the card out and putting it back in helps, not always though.
 
Looking at pictures 'on the card' with a computer is something I never do. If a card is going to go wrong it is the moment of connection when it will happen. The less times you plug in a card full of images the better.

If you want to view pictures on a laptop from a card then copy them to a folder on the laptops hard drive and view that folder. I normally cut and paste from the card so the card is empty afterwards and ready to reuse.
 
the read error happened when i looked at the pics on my camera would that make a difference
 
it may have written something to the card when you viewed them on your laptop, and when inserted into the camera the camera could not read the info.

As said above copy from the card to laptop and backup, then your ok to reformat the card in the camera in the knowledge your photos are on your laptop and backed up.

do you format after every session if not how often
 
I copy my cards to the computer, back them up, format the cards in the camera, and store them ready for use.

I never leave any photos on a card in the camera overnight.
Cards are formatted before every use.
I have only ever had 1 card fault and that was when i dropped it in the sea, when changing cards, I recovered the pics when i dried out the card, the card was then binned.

i leace pics on cards for weeks.


be doing pics for 8 years and only had one read error

Thats a cool attitude if your taking the odd snap shot but if your earning money from your shots, I think a bit more care and concern is needed, as you may be in a position where you will never be able to replicate the shot.

From the moment you press the shutter button those pictures are in a position where 1 wrong move / action can totally destroy them, and these actions may not be in your control.

Digital photographs are the most fragile state photographs have ever been in.
 
hi its right

if you view i file in photo shop or any other editing software it modifys the file slightly which makes it un readable in your camera, had this a bit, nearly had a heart attack the first time

Test it - take a photo of anything now, load it into your computer and open it in photoshop etc then put it back in the camera
 
that is exactly what i did

messes about in photoshop so thanks for that.

if i am being paid for pics i alaways back them up twice straight away.

thats one copy in origanal format and another copy for me to play around with
 
im a bit paranoid when it comes to paid work, i put 2 copies on dvd then one raw on an external and the jpgs on another external, maybe a bit much but some shoots are big money and i wouldnt want the guilt of loosing a shot

Ditto - I also ensure the original format are marked as read only on the hard drive so I can't overwrite them by mistake.

whe you delete the pics you cant see them again BUTthey are still there
if you have the right software u can retreive them.

if you format the card the pictures are lost for ever and ever and ever.

But then if you had no more room on the card couldn't you just delete all the pics, take a load more, and then later retrieve the deleted ones? Unlimited card space :D

But I guess it can't work like this or it would have caught on :lol:

not quite sure what the software is but i think thats how it works

When you delete pictures on a card all that happens is the file allocation table says that space is available to use again. Formatting just rewrites the file allocation table completely. In both cases if nothing new has been written to the previously used space then recovery software can get the pictures back.

You need to overwrite the whole card memory with something (or use a utility program) should you need to remove sensitive data completely.

Much better to COPY and paste, then you still have the files on the card should the paste fail for any reason. I only clear the card once the files have been verified on the pc.
 
Cut and paste verifies the write with a crc check before deleting (think I read that somewhere but i could have just made it up :) ). Plus recovery software can get the pictures back easily in any case. personal preferences really. I don't like the idea of being careful because something important is left on a card so I must remember not to format it yet etc.
 
I always transfer stuff off at the nearest oppertune moment and usually format the card then so its always ready to go.
