Yes
I am a member of car forum and want to upload some pics. When i try to do this it says my file is too large and needs to be under 256kb. I am using photoshop CS3. I open the pic in CS then click on 'image' then 'Image size' but it offers no adjustment for the KB. Am i missing something? or how am i meant to know when my pic is under 256 kb as i am running a mac. All help appreciated.

if you save it at 800x600ish then when saving click file, then save to web, save it as a jpeg and that should do the trick

It will upload onto the site if i re-size it to 600 x 400 but the problem is that it is appearing at half the size of everyone elses pics.....

You need to alter the quality slider on the right hand side of the save for web screen until the image is below 200k saving this way this also reduces the colours available so the image will look right on the web

It tells you beneath the preview of the picture on the left hand side of the screen, you need to let go of the slider for it to update the value

Yeah i took the slider to around 90 which told me the pic is around 244k and saved it yet i still cant upload as it saying that it is too large and must be under 256kb. This is so annoying!

It must be 200k or less for TP  no idea why this wouldn't work for your other forum though?

I have lowered the slider level but the pic is uploading far too small and like i say - half the size of everyone elses

use image menu then image size and set the longest size to 800 make sure you have the tick boxes all ticked at the bottom, in the bottom box select best for reduction then ok, then file save for web and do the above and the pic should be fine

I have tried all the above and its still telling me the file is too big to upload. This is driving me nuts. Most of the people who post on this car forum aint even into photography so its make me wonder how they manage it... I do appreciate your help though

This isn't meant to be sarcastic but are you uploading the correct image? as the save for web does not necessarily save the file to the folder you opened the original in I generally have to change it?

Is there any other programme i can use which is easier to resize the pics on my Mac? Im not sure if i can do it with iphoto or not.

In the save for web options see where there is a preset drop down?
To the right of that is an arrow.. click it.
Then choose optimise to file size, you can work out the rest :)

Bear in mind some car forums are products of poor phpBB installations and mods..
It may be that the guidelines or rules are not actually what is specified in the installation of their gallery.

Have you made sure the dpi is is set to 72 for web use as by default on a lot of cameras they save at 300 dpi( DOTS PER INCH ) which in fact makes the picture file larger due to the extra pixels

I had same trouble, dont know if its right but this is what I did and its worked for me.
Open pic, go to image, image size, put 800 for example in longest side and save.
Open pic again, go to file, scripts, image processor, where it says no 3 file type save as jpeg thers a quality box, enter a number 1-12, 12 being highest quality and so file size, you prob want 8-10, you'll have to try to see which gives you the file size you want.
