last night I took some photos of the stars and using the Canon pro 4 editing program I saved them as JPG so I could post them on the forum, but most of the stars dissapeared and the quality dropped quite a lot, is there a way around this?
No processing, I loaded the photos from my camera SD card into Canon pro 4 then saved them as JPG files.
In the first place, when they were in the camera and saved to the memory card, what format were they in? Were they in JPEG in the first place?
Sometimes when an image is saved in JPEG format, then when using the software to exported as or saved as (by using the
Save As...), another JPEG, you would find a little lose of quality. The more you export or saved the copy as another file in JPEG, the more lose of quality. Kinda like trying to make a photocopy of a photocopy which is already a photocopy of another photocopy.
But I am guessing they would be in RAW because you mention using "Canon pro 4 editing program" as most people would usually use any editing software (supplied by the camera company) when they take photos in RAW. (Although some may actually download JPEGs into those software anyway.)
In this case, I would suggest, as Box Brownie would point out, use higher settings when you save as JPEG. It depends on all the software, some would let you set based on numbers like 1, 2, 3, etc., some would let you set based on per cent like 0%, 10%, etc, and some would be based on words like
Low,
Normal,
High, etc.
When saving to JPEG, go as high as you like, like Box Brownie suggest, quality level 7 or higher, but I would suggest the maximum highest like 10 or 12 (I believe Adobe does up to level 12), or 100% or
Maximum.
If needed, why not consider saving them as PNG format and upload to the forum, then see what happens.
