Hi All! First post from a complete photography beginner so please be gentle!

I have a Canon SX60 bridge camera and have taken some lovely point and press photos in jpeg auto. I've dabbled a little with the manual settings and the raw format but cannot get the raw to download to a PC.

I've tried to install the software as suggested by canon but my PC windows operating system is too old (Vista). Can anyone suggest other software that I can use which is compatible with an ancient windows.

There shouldn't be any problem downloading RAW files to your computer. I was doing it with XP, so there should be no problem with Vista. There could be a problem with the camera if you can't.

Is there some reason you can't install Canon's Digital Picture Professional? That will be the best and cheapest way to process your RAW files.

The CS2 mentioned will enable editing of images, but not processing of RAW files without converting the RAW files to DNG files using the Adobe DNG Converter software. (always use the latest version) You camera is to new for its RAW files to be able to used with the Adobe Camera Raw plugin that comes with CS2.

You can drag and drop the files in Windows. There's s RAW codec available for Vista too from the Canon site.

But before you decide to shoot RAW again, you should consider your workflow, what will you need to process the RAW files.

use the adobe link in the techtimes link above to get to the adobe cs2 page otherwise its a nightmare to find!

direct link here though you may not see it if not logged in to adobe

and serial number as legitimately supplied on the adobe page too
1045-1412-5685-1654-6343-1431 . generic adobe serial for this product

Adobe CS2 is not free at all. Adobe no longer maintain their activation servers so this code has been provided for people who have bought and paid for CS2 to ensure they can carry on using it. Its certainly not a freebie.

Of course if your scruples are such that you regard it as a freebie then I guess adobe must have allowed for that

wtf have my scruples got to do with. come down off your high horse and stop acting the martyr. adobe list the product WITH a generic serial key to download. they have even stated they created a special version since the old version activation was switched off. so how then do you explain that as being unscrupulous when the download and key is posted on adobes own public site.

oh i know why. because it seems whever i post things you have to make some p***ant comment and clearly have a problem with me but rather than actually say something resort to being a pathetic childish keyboard warrior who has never grown up.

As stated above RAW is not a 'fixed' format in that it can (and usually does) change between camera models. Thus a CR2 file (say) can have various flavours and you need the software to match.
Hence you can rush out and buy the latest camera model only to find you need to update Photoshop. (Not sure if this is still the case with the subscription model)

There are some free RAW handling programs about.
You could use the Adobe DNG converter then work on you files in DNG.

As mentioned it may be more trouble than it's worth for you to shoot RAW. If you are not doing any PP you could be wasting your time.

so for all the willy waiving, name calling, shirt tearing and persecution complex accusations ( grow up, stop being so f*****g silly) you are wrong. Adobe say you're wrong. Its not pedantic either. You are wrong no matter how often you say it differently. Deal with it. And maybe advising people to steal software isn't the best either. Adobe have always been very clear about this

Play nice please, I don't want to hand short suspensions out for you both to cool off.

FWIW Hugh is correct in that it's not legal to download and use CS2 if you don't already have a license.
They *did* only provide those serials to remedy the problem of turning off the activation servers.

There is no change. The software and serial numbers were posted for use solely by existing legal Adobe licensees of CS2 and other products of that era (i.e., purchased licenses for these products from Adobe, authorized resellers, or via registered with Adobe transfer from such licencees) who need to reactivate their software (such as having to reinstall due to system failures, etc.) and for no other purpose whatsoever, despite the apparent wishful thinking of many.

Is it illegal for you to download and use it without a license? Yes
Are they likely to catch you if you do so? Probably not
Is it OK for you to do so?Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.
Does TP recommend it? Absolutely not.
Does Marcel now need a cup of coffee? Yes he does.
And a biscuit? Of course.
