I have read lots of comments recently about shooting in RAW as opposed to Jpg, what are the advantages?

When I set my camera to RAW I am only able to store just over 40 images where as Jpg is 100's why is this?

Thanks
Tim

Raw is the digital equivalent of a negative, it is the data seen by the sensor with no modification, with raw you can make these adjustments on the PC/Mac, i.e, white ballance expouser ect. raw is larger as it is not compressed in any way and has more data in it, thats how I understand it anyway.
