RAW in PE9

When I crop a RAW image in Photoshop Elements 9, a box appears with the option of selecting 8 bits/channel or 16 bits/channel.

Does either make any difference in picture quality? As I am not sure which to choose.

16 bit has more data but some of your editing options wmay be limited (some filters etc) it'll also make the files bigger and you can't save as a jpeg in 16bit.
