Raw images

Need some help here guys,after adjusting raw files i am left with a duplicate i think xmp?.
Your original raw files are left intact acting like the old negative i think i am right in saying.
Now the duplicate raw files i try to open wont do so,so where am i going wrong. (This is my first attempt at raw)

The .XMP files are sidecar files created when you process a RAW file in ACR.

Not sure about that bit,but anyway if i go back to my raw files & want to convert them to jpegs, what to do & will my raw files be lost after that.

Your RAW will still be intact.

The .XMP file will only be created if you click Open Image or Done. The Open Image option will open the image for further editing in Photoshop. Done will also create the .XMP file which will let you come back to the original RAW file later, and continue editing from the same point.

If you choose to edit the RAW file, save as Jpeg or Tiff, and then choose Cancel, there is no .XMP file created, and if you choose to re-edit the same RAW file later, you start from the default.

If you delete the .XMP files, then choose to re-edit a RAW file later, it will open as the default original image.

I choose the Cancel option once I've saved the Jpeg (or very rarely Tiff), as I don't generally re-edit, and if I do, I'll start from scratch.

Each to there own method though.

If you convert your RAW files to DNGs the data on the XMP file (keywords, processing data, copyright info etc) will be stored within the DNG file, as well as all the RAW data.
