Yes
for experimenting on whether i can gain any advantage from RAW

is this freeware any good

free raw download

It is often recommended as a good one yes.

You could also download a months trial of Lightroom but that will cost you £200 if you want to continue with it :)

Moving to processing....

It works but personally I find it very slow compared to something like lightroom or photoshop. The biggest drawback for me is that you have to wait for ajustments to happen after moving the sliders, this makes fine tuning a pain in the arse, the image can take about 5 seconds to update after an ajustment.

many thanks
i would buy software but first i would like to 'try it out'
my needs arent great but it would be good to have that edge when i want to do a larger print
i envisage buying a bridge cam soon with raw as part of the spec

...along with i/s??.... any comments on this

it will probably be an olympus bridge slr

Fujifilm do good bridge cameras with IS.

IrfanView will do simple RAW conversion, using the very good dcraw.

Dean, you can get Ufraw which is in effect a Raw converter for GIMP. I've played with it out of interest but would far rather splash out around seventy quid on a version of Elements given the choice.

Does GIMP support raw?

Yes it does but it is really dreadful on most images. I find in most cases i give up as it makes the image look nothing like the image on the back of the camera even when 'camera WB' is selected in the Gimp. Open the raw file in Lightroom and all is well with the world!
