Why does a new RAW file come into Lightroom from my camera at about 8mp and then goes to PHotoshop for editing... leaving a copy on lightroom called xxxxx-edit... which is about 27mb?

Even if I do nothing to it and zero all settings.. its still makes the copy and saves it with the -edit tag next to the original RAW file at that huge size.

Therefore by the time I have imported one RAW file, sent to photoshop as a copy and then saved the result as a TIFF.....I have huge amounts of filesize.... something like 52mb! with 3 copies of just one picture.

the increase files will be uncompressed TIFFS.

That's the way they are im afraid :) Big :D

I keep all my processed shots like that, with layers, so theyre a minimum of 40 odd meg.

No wonder Im running out of space :D

Wonder what other people do?

I've often read threads like this and wonder does everyone usually do so much with their images? I don't enjoy editing so hardy ever use PS. I have RAWs that are from the camera and 'best' jpegs that have been spat out by Rawshooter after I've finished tweaking. That is it - no other versions! The large jpegs get uploaded if prints are wanted and get viewed on screen. Editing for the forum consists of size reduction a quick sharpen and a 'save as' in Acdsee 4 - an old but fast version.

I doubt there are more than a dozen tiffs on my computer!

I keep three versions now.

The Raw, the processed TIFF, and the websized version (makes it much easier to browse through a thumbnail of small 100k jpegs, than 100meg tiffs ;))

I now only keep:

The original RAW on one drive

The editted TIFF on another drive

The itty-bitty jpeg on the desktop or laptop depending on which machine i've used to edit.

I'm also needing a jolt of "binning-the-crap-immediately" discipline as i find I'm sentimentally attached to all the pics I take :(

so which do i bin then.......the converted from lightroom ones?
those are the big ones.. must getused to doing that in my workflow!

If you never use the TIFS theres no point keeping them. Which do you edit from ?

I keep tiffs as my finally processed large files for printing.

Sorry - i wasn't clear - is the lightroom tiff redundant or the editted version?

This was far too long ago........I havnt got a clue what anyone is on about now.............and I started the thread!! :D  :shake:
