RAW DPP and Sharpening ?

Folks,

Pretty new to this digital lark... I got my camera last year and have been learning every time I use it since.

I generally shoot in RAW then use DPP for the basic simple stuff to get it ready.

I am however wondering what to do with sharpening. Generally i don't add much and set it to about 5 on the slider (out of 10) I have also noticed an RGB version that is set to zero but goes upto 500

I will post 2 versions..

1 = My normal sharpening
2= Trying adding a lot more...

What do people think ? ( processed these slightly differently sorry)

Personally if you have to use a sharpening of 5 to get images you are happy with you might be using a rubbish lens... 5 for me is ridiculously oversharpened. (although in fairness I'm using a 50mm prime) The second image looks overdone to me, but then again flickr sharpens all small images.

I am glad you said that..... (I am using zooms, but they are both fairly decent (one is an L))

I look at others efforts and I think wow thats over sharpened but they appear to get really good comments...

I have tried with the sharpening at 3 and 5 and I struggle to see the difference, but then once they get posted they get "changed" during the posting process anyway.

I guess I am trying to understand why people need to do all this unsharp mask stuff I hear about ? as mine look ok to me without having to do all that ?

If you shoot raw you should always need sharpening before you convert even with a good lens and 5-6 sounds about right. If you shoot JOG in camera then the camera does the sharpening so you wouldn't need as much.

Once you've done your PP in Photoshop you can stilll benefit from unsharp especially if you've resized. The trick always is to use as much as you need and no more.
 
I started out ramping up the sharpness setting in the RAW tab in response to poor performance from a couple of my lenses but after someone on here had a torrid time with a 50D I think and discovered the use of the sharpening slider in JPEG I now use it all the time.

From my 40D the RAW images import with a sharpeing setting on the RAW tab of 3 - I leave that alone.

Then depending on which lens I am using I will use a sharpeing setting in the JPEG tab between 50 and 150 (50 for my 40-200, 100 for my 50 and 10-22 and 150 for my 17-85)

Most of the time my 70-200 could probably get away with no sharpening at all.

Will take a look.

I will say both of my main lenses look pretty sharp most of the time as well.

EDIT :- Did you mean the rgb tab btw ?
 
I use DPP myself, and to be honest the amount of sharpening I do varies from one pic to another. I find if I crop the pic, then I increase the sharpening.
I think it is like all PP, there is no right or wrong answer, it is all down to what end result you are happy with. Providing you are not receiving several comments which suggest you images are soft, then I would not bother. Regarding the images you submitted on this thread, although different, I would say they both work well.
 
i would avoid the sharpening slider in the jpg tab in dpp. it adds a lot of noise to the photo and when you blow it up to full screen you'll notice it. normally you shouldnt need more sharpening than what is available in the raw tab because anymore than that is probably too much or you are trying to sharpen poor technique, in the sense that the photo was soft to begin with because of movement or misfocus.
