I'm just starting to shoot in raw and would appreciate your advice.

Few questions:-

Do all raw converters do the same thing? are some better than others? I'm using Canon DPP does it do exactly the same?

I'm seeing no difference between my raw and jpeg images - probably because I don't know/understand the correct workflow

Do you make adjustments to the raw image and then convert to jpeg or convert the raw image and adjust the jpeg?

Would be pleased to hear your workflows

Thanks - when they say you're never to old to learn - don't believe it!!!

You should adjust everything you can in the RAW converter. Essentially, adjust things in the order the program presents them to you.

I found Canon's DPP difficult to use and use UFRaw (it is free, excellent and uses the same engine as Rawtherapee (dcraw!))

A bit of explanation.

RAW files are just data files that contain (most) of the information your camera records when you click the shutter.

You then load this into whatever photo software and it immediately generates a preview image - usually a JPEG. This you then adjust using the sliders
etc until it looks good to go with the software using info in the RAW file for info.

Then you save the result to a completely separate file - usually as a jpeg but there are other formats. The RAW file meanwhile should have been unchanged and is there if you
want to re-visit it at a future date.

Most on here (?) tend to use Lightroom or Photoshop - they are the best but bl**dy expensive.

Thank you Steve for your explanation
