RAW, ARW, TIFF & CS2 ?

Possibly a dumb newbie question but hey, I'm a dumb newbie. :nuts:

I get the raw files from my Sony and they are in .ARW format. CS2 does not recognise them.
The other option I hav is to convert them with the supplied Sony s/w into either .SR2 (not recognised by CS2) or convert them to TIFF.

Is converting to TIFF before any manipulation the correct way to go about it?

Anything else I should know about this one?

Ratty - .arw files are Sony's proprietary raw format (Canon is .crw, Nikon is .nef etc). There should be conversion software on the Adobe site somewhere & it should be free. If not, conversion to tiff won't damage the image - just convert to jpeg if you want to & save.
 
You need the ARW plug in for the RAW files to work in CS2 like Phil T mentioned. I had to get the plug in before my ARW files would work from my Alpha. Look on the Adobe website and find the plug in that supports the ARW format and download and install - instructions should be on the site for this process.

Just reading this thread for some advice, and wanted to ask a related question. If it's best to retain images in RAW, then converting ARW files to TIFF presumably reduces the quality.

So if I'm using the sony supplied software to convert from ARW, I presumably can't use a RAW file in photoshop; I have to manipulate/edit/whatever a TIFF file?

Furthermore, does this mean that I have to individually convert each file?!
 
TIF doesn't loose quality Math. It's just that working on a RAW file you can do certain tweaks and not actually alter the image data - just the way it displays. So you can always go backto it and work on it again without degrading. Once you convert to a TIF or any other format you have saved those tweaks and can't undo them although obviously you can counter them in Photoshop and do loads of other stuff. Stay with TIF and your quality won't degrade though.
