been going through my pics for a competition and some of them are actually really ****ing good, I've been upset with my quality of pics for a while but going through my old ones some are a load better than I remembered them to be.

Good for you I often go through older raw files and look at shots that I cast aside and think 'now why did I do that?' . I think one think most of us are guilty of is being overly critical of our own work

yeah, I normally do that too, maybe I'm just in a happy mood, or i've been slipping and my older stuff is better
