What's the deal with ramblers? I seem to have been following a few around lately (unintentionally) who walk the same public footpaths as me, but yet I manage to walk them fine without spending 500 quid on gortex clothing that are otherwise used to climb the dark side of ben nevis.

What's the deal?

I should probably ask my folks who, as I speak, are out rambling and they've gone out with the whole shooting match to walk round a reservoir with my nephews, who'll do the same walk as them in their jeans and trainers.
 
I suppose it`s better than going up Ben Nevis in jeans and t-shirt, then having to call out the rescue people!

lol.
 
Pack rats!! The worst thing about them these days is when they insist on talking to people on their mobiles when everybody else around them is looking forward to a nice quiet day on the fells!!

Much the same difference as kids playing football in their trainers as oppose to those playing in football boots I suppose? :shrug:

I know what I'd rather be wearing when the REMOVED English weather changes on a sixpence to hail, sleet and force 10's - there's absolutely nothing worse than walking a fair distance in wet jeans - apart maybe than having piles on said long walk....... :D:lol::shrug::D

Try going to Keswick or Hawes, most ramblers have enough gear to climb the Eiger, yet only get from the car park to the shops and back...........:lol:
 
If going for a proper walk I will have decent gear on, modern fabrics are great for keeping cool / warm and being breatheable they are very comfy aswell.

Living in the Lakes I am always prepared if I am out and it shocks me at what some people go on the fells with - I know you are not refering to the fells but comfort always comes first with me.

You do have to laugh at the tourists with Ice Axes in Bowness on a hot Summers day though ;)
 
It's the plonkers walking along specifically built and gravelled public footpaths with cramp-ons that I'm talking about! :)
 
Just to put in an opposing point of view....

They're probably wondering why you're mucking around with all that camera gear and tripod when they can take a perfectly good picture on their little point and shoot...

Horses for courses....
 
So you don't have those walking pole thingys then? Tell me you've got kendall mint cake, you must have kendall mint cake - slurpp. I think as long as you're warm and dressed for the weather it doesn't matter if you have a tea cosy on your head :shrug:

Got to agree with with the above. If you're out on the hills, then you need the correct gear. I've seen the weather go from boiling hot in the car park, to -5 blowing a gale on top of the mountain. I'd rather have the kit with me than not.

I've also seen people try to walk Ben Nevis in flip flops :cuckoo::cuckoo: and a tee shirt. They where walking up and everyone else was coming down in waterproof jackets, etc.. as it was -2 on top without the wind chill. I don't think they got the point.

haha this post caught my eye and I just had to reply

there seems to be millions of ramblers in my area - I can never understand why they need walking poles (x2) and super-technical clothing for walking the local footpaths

Maybe the Ice Axe is to get through the queues in Booths Supermarket on a busy day ;)

But yep i often wonder why folks need so much stuff, and why so many local shops in the lakes sell so much rubbish. Prime example "if you have boots you must have gaters!" so a man in George fisher told me once, he looked a bit pale when i said i always take carrier bags with me for putting my feet into before putting them in boots - Its worked for many years :D and in my mind is more enviromentally friendly. :nuts:

I'm not for the incorrect equipment (I have too many friends in the MRT) but think folks go overboard

I used feel the same Rubber Duck, when I was a kid, living on the edge of the Beacons. (Yes a long time ago now :lol: ) I understand it now, because when you go to a new area and you get lost or the weather turns bad, then all that kit comes in handy.

It sounds silly but most of the kit is for just in case. You're better safe than sorry I think is what I'm trying to say.

As some one who damaged his knee several years ago playing rugby,
a walking pole for when I'm on Dartmoor takes a lot of stress and strain off the joints.:thumbs:

As for a Gortex jacket, I've had mine for nearly 10 years now, it's been all over Dartmoor,the Lakes,the Peaks, the Beacons and the Howgills and I wouldn't go out without it.
 
Perhaps they are walking many times further than you are? Perhaps they are doing a 4 or 5 day walk? Perhaps you don't know all the facts and details ;)
 
whereas you've spent a few hundred puunds on camera gear to partake in your hobby, they are spending there money on clothing to partake in theres. i cant see the problem, i know ive only got one jacket that i go walking in, and thats gortex,


scouts moto - be prepared, on hills the weather can turn very quickly so you need to be prepared if it does.
 
No amount of expensive clothing and kit will protect them from tripping over your tripod :lol::lol:

Gortex = The new Burberrys. For the Outdoor Chav.

I'm a rambler & a photographer & wouldn't be without either my photography gear or decent walking gear.... 10 minutes in the rain in a pair of jeans this times of year could see you in potentially serious trouble, ask these guys at the mountain rescue here in Snowdonia.....

I do agree with the walking poles though, waste of time, infact more dangerous than useful ... I've seen a couple of people go on their backside after tripping over them climbing up a mountain.

In the big scheme of things though if people want to spend their cash on gear they might not need how can anyone into Photography comment on it & keep a straight face !!

The funny thing is it seems that looking like a "rambler" is becoming the in thing....makes a change to people looking down their rarther large noses whilst I'm wandering past covered in cr*p up to my elbows, albeit still drier than they are as I'm in my expensive gear :lol:

Hubby spends a fortune on his kit but he walks up hills and mountains and needs the protection that he pays good money for - I don't mind him spending good money on his gear, and yeah he has the ice axe and the crampons but better safe than sorry

From what I can make out, the OP is talking about those 'ramblers' that walk (kitted up to the eyeballs) the local footpaths in groups of 12, never climbing more than 10 feet above sea level and only getting wet from the splashes of the cars passing them
 
but the state of the roads those puddles could be the size of lakes :P

And those people that get wound up when people have a little mock at them, well then they deserve mocking for being uptight!!!!

To all those who cant understand this, get a grip!!!

wheres the guy who does the cartoons? he could do some sketches to illustrate!
