RAM question

I have been asked by a friend to buy a mobo, CPU and RAM that will replace aging hardware in their current computer.
Budget is tight but it is enough to stretch to a low end socket 1155 board that supports ivybridge, i5 3470 Ivybridge chip and 16gb RAM.
The problem I am having is that the 2x8gb sticks of RAM I'm looking at do not show in any of the mobo's memory compatibility charts. Does this mean they won't work?
This is the first time I've encountered this in a custom build.

I never look at the motherboards memory compatibility charts and never had a problem. As long as it's the correct spec, it should be absolutely fine :thumbs:
 
Which "low end socket 1155" board are you using?

Do any other 8G memory sticks show in the compatibility chart?

A gigabyte H61 or Asus P8 equivalent.
There was a limited range of other 8gb sticks listed but the codes didn't quite match.
 
P67s are well beyond the budget.

Board plus CPU plus RAM has to come in at £300. He has no movement on that budget.
 
That's a decent package!
Sadly upon presenting the option to him he has told me that the budget now has to include a mid atx case, power supply and a graphics card.
Budget can be stretched to about £320 max.

Is there a board you could recommend that's like the H67s, reason for asking is he will never over clock so a P67 seems wasted.

I may tell him just to go with an 8gb kit for the time being and he can add later.
In reality all he wants is better performance in photoshop CS6 which at present his pentium 4 and 2gb ram cannot deliver.

(Cheapest 16gb kit seems to be £60~. Sell the 8gb and you'll only need about £30 over budget. Totally worth it)

(note this adds it to your shopping basket but it is cheaper than the DABS version at £276)

I also wouldn't touch an H61 based board. With that mobo, you can always add 2 x 4G sticks as the mobo has 4 slots. You could do that straight off for just over £300.
 
Can you not reuse those from the previous build? £320 for everything is a big ask (as the kids say these days)

They sell bundles so mobo ram and other bits together for cheaper
 
I will have a look over the suggestions and maybe try egg him for some extra money.

No idea, cause they can, future proofing, bragging rights lol. I genuinely have no idea.

I might just recommend 8gb.
Should be more than enough for CS6
 
See I use 8gb DDR2 in my machine and CS6 with 5D2 files runs Ok.

I don't see the harm in throwing 16gb in though if it can be done within budget.

What's the thoughts on H67 boards where there is no interest in overclocking?

Until you try and do something particularly complicated, run out of assigned memory and start hitting the scratch disk. Then you'll see a marked decrease in performance. Or if you're multitasking :)

H67 if I remember rightly is H61 but with 6gb Sata
 
Well I spoke to my mate and passed on the advice you gave.
Subsequently I have managed to get him to stretch his budget to £360

So on dabs for that money i have managed to find the following -

Asus P8Z77 LX motherboard

Intel i5 3470 CPU

Corsair vengeance 4x4gb 1600 RAM

OCZ 500W Power supply

ATX case

Does that sound decent?
