I never really get the chance to jack my studio lights high (due to ceiling restrictions).

Simple question(s) really, what's the advantage of raising lights? Secondly, I realise you can buy dedicated weights to stabalise stands, but are there any alternatives that you chaps use?

Cheers.

The obvious advantage is that we're used to light coming from above, whether it's daylight or artificial light, so light placed high tends to look natural.

The other main advantage is that a light placed high and frontally usually defines the shape of the face better than any other, creating controlled shadows that show high cheekbones etc.

As for weights, the more weight the better, and a lot of people use either sandbags or weight training ankle weights

Thanks Gary (and thanks for the prompt delivery of my last bits of kit :))
