It seems that the Camera Raw plug-in I need to read my D90's NEF files is not compatible with the version of PS Elements I have (5.0).

Is there a way round this does anyone know?

Use a freeware RAW converter/editor then import into Elements5

Yes download Adobes free DNG converter (5.5), this converts your NEF files to DNG (adobe raw) which elements 5.0 should be able to open with it's camera raw.
