Qulity of picture

When my picture from my DSLR is on my computer i can check the metadata in all the data it saids X resolution 350 & Y resolution 350 . Is that dot per inch ? My old pocket camera is X res 72 & y res 72 and the picture is lesser quality and can i find out if the new camera that i am gonna buy is high in resolution the same or similar to the old DSLR

It is dots per inch, but it is not useful as a measure of quality.

Just read reviews and look at images on sites like DP Review.
