Aperture was my guess, too. It was easy to answer when the first letter was revealed, though non-togs still didn't have a clue, as the Latin word isn't one we'd use for a house feature nowadays.

So, the answer isn't aperture, nor any other "a"-word.

hehe, must admit after aperture my first thought was lens, but I looked up the etymology of lens and nothing doing. Lens led to focus, and a a quick "ka Ching".
