Quick question

Hey all,

I have my camera now and and loving it! Just a quick question. I'm a little unsure of the advantages of having jpeg or raw images or both. I can shoot both at the same time on my camera but should I ? I don't have photoshop yet and very new to everything. Say if I liked a picture and wanted to see what aperture or shutter speed I used can I do that with jpeg or raw.

The great advantage of shooting RAW is the flexibility available in post processing. RAW files can also be converted to other formats such as JPEG, TIFF etc. Using Adobe Camera RAW in Photoshop or Lightroom, the original RAW file is not altered, no matter what processing is applied (short of deletion!) so the original data is available for processing in multiple ways.

If you don't at present have PP software, then JPEG is the way to shoot. The files will be smaller, but the camera applies processing such as contrast, sharpening, white balance etc. and you end up with a printable image straight from the camera.

I would shoot both for the time being if you dont use any editing software, Difference between Raw and jpeg is Raw is unprocessed so you may need to process the photo yourself to get the best out of it with all the extra information Raw includes. Where as your jepg out of your camera has been processed as to how your camera thinks how it should look.

As Gordon, I'd shoot both, put the raw files to one side until you're happy enough editing them, when you get into that you'll be glad you've got the raw files to go back to.
