I'm popping back to blighty next month for a few days, and was just going to bring a bit of cash with me. Now the question is, is it still a pain in the rear to spend £50 notes, or are they more widely accepted these days? I just remember that nobody was ever prepared to take them for fear of forgeries.

Over here I've nobody so much as bats an eyelid when given a 100 or 200 franc note (about £70 or £140 respectively) to pay for something.

I can't say I have £50 notes very often but most shops have forgery detecting pens so don't think it would be a problem- whenever I've happened to have any £50 notes they've been subjected to checks but I've never been told I can't use it!

I've seen my parents use them quite regularly and they never have any problems.

(Wish they'd share them with me lol! :))

most places refuse them, and generally because of this they have reduced in value. now a £50 note is only worth £40. I'm, happy to buy them off you at that rate as I'm a bit of a collector

The only problem with trying to spend them is many shops won't have enough cash in the float to make change! I had to refuse people so many times after they tried using them for a £5 purchase!

I've been in shops in Chester, Liverpool and Manchester where they've had signs on display saying that they won't accept 50's. Better to just leave the cash in your bank and use a switch card or similar.

So it's still rather hit and miss then. Unfortunately I'm going to need to bring a bit of cash as the card I have from my bank only works in Switzerland. I never got around to applying for one that allows purchases or withdrawals in other countries. Nor do I have a CC - at one time I got into a bit of a mess with one in the UK, and vowed never to have another.

So £20 pound notes it is then. Thanks guys.

The new £50 was released just last month. So now there's confusion too.
Stick with smaller denominations.

I have some excellent £20 notes that I can sell to you for £30 each if you are interested

How about 25 Swiss francs per £20. You'll be getting a good solid currency which is considered a safe haven, especially in these trying economic times ;)

The biggest problem with spending £50 notes is that many smaller businesses really can't afford to drop the £50 should the note turn out to be a forgery - £10 or even £20 can be absorbed but a £50 loss can make a very big diffenerence.

Pretty sure all high st, and shopping centre stores accept them. The only thing is some stores do double check them by getting another member of staff over, but as long as they are legit you've got nothing to worry about. Just dont take the mick and use one for a small transaction.

I think most shops with middle to high ticket prices will accept them, in fact the only shop I know that wont accept them is Greggs......

Unless Michelle mcmanus went in then they would accept 3 :naughty: lol

Spent a few today and no problems at all, major retailer and didn't even check them.

To be fair, im a Jeweller and see a fair amount of 50s and the moodys are pretty easy to spot, and if we get a bundle we check them under UV and the absolute fail safe test is to rub them on a plain sheet of white paper, if the ink comes off on the paper they are legit if it dosent then they are fake, simples

So if they are real the ink comes off?

Yes, if theres no ink they are moody, try it, it works with all English notes,

Notes are printed on material not paper, the moodys are printed paper, but the material prevents the ink from drying

Can you rub it too much can you get it back to white?

I got that excited about rubbing money on paper and making a picture that my message didn't really make sense lol

I understood what you meant ;)

Back to the OP. If you are concerned about bring large amounts of cash have you seen the pre-paid currency cards?

http://www.worldfirst.com/currency-card/?ID=1050&gclid=CNT45aKd96wCFUEntAodqEyqTA

I always use them when travelling. You can register it online and complete balance checks and even top it up. Bascially works the same as a debit/credit card only it's pre-paid so no nasty bills when you get home!

The linky above is one company that does them, there are a few others.

Just heard

The bank of England has just printed a £m pound note. If its successful they may make another.:lol::lol:

Realspeed

Back to the OP, I was under the impression no one can refuse to take them as they are legal tender, they may not like it but its still legal money:shrug:

I don't think they get away with refusing the money, more that they choose not to enter into a contract of sale iykwim
