Just want to add my praise to the growing TP Lencarta Customer base :) bought 2 flash kits off them and everything has been 10/10 :) had 1 niggle with a softbox speedring but they've bent over backwards to get it sorted :).

Thanks Garry & lencarta.

Now The question

Has anyone made there own flash modifiers for studio lights and what would you say is the best material to use? I'm looking at making my own background reflector & snoot, If anyone would be so kind as to give me some rought dimensions of one that would be great.

My thoughts so far for the background reflector, would be a rolled cone cut in half painted black then lined with Crumpled Tinfoil or if i can get a sheet the reflective material you get in large fluorescent lights.

what d'ya mean by bg reflector

a snoot could be made by cinefoil rolled round the front of the head and taped on?

Just wondering if the angle of opening matters a great deal or is just cut like that to prevent light spillage?

I've looked into blackwrap might have to order a roll.

all the ones I've used have had flat fronts :S

I would hazzard a guess that it helps control spill in a more specific direction but lets more light out the other side, wiser heads will confirm/destroy this

Please be careful, lights get very hot and it could be very easy to set the whole place on fire. These things are made of thermally efficient metal for a reason.

c'mon David put that brain of your to work! :naughty:

If you aim a flat fronted one at a bakground at an angle, what shape is the patch of light on the BG? It looks suspiciously like the aperture of that background light! The reason is that you can aim a light from the side and have it appear more circular, because you can't easily create a circle on the background as the light would be smack in the middle of your shot.

The Lencarta background reflector is cut at a different angle but works in the same way. Basically it lets light out of the side instead of the front, and controls the light direction, producing a large area of even lighting
I don't see a big problem with making it, but it really should be able to rotate so that the light can be aimed specifically low/high.
The inner surface is a sort of anodised alluminium. If making one, it might be a good idea to paint the inside matt white, because the light that it produces needs to be even - a cooking foil surface might not be even enough

ffs dammit :S
in my defence my brain is running on 3 hours sleep and on its third coursework prep of the day I think I hand in a few % of my degree today :S
