Quick Mask Problems Photoshop CS4

I'm having some serious problems using the quick mask tool.
When i've done my masking & hit Q to select the red masked area, the red disapears & the full image becomes selected.

When i hit QMask again the area I had just masked appears again in red?!

I've read that this is a reoccuring problem over the last few versions of PS but when i try to sort it out nothing works, i've searched through loadsa solutions provided by various users on other forums & nothing seems to work...

I'm on a 30day trial period presently & was loving it until this, now i'm not so sure.

Can any1 throw up any suggestions to help?

I make selection first, hit Q activate red masked area check it looks ok make any adjustments hit Q again to get back to marching ants then on the bottom of the layers panel click add mask

It works fine in CS4, although I don't use it a lot.
Oh just a thought but the unselected part of the image is supposed to be selected in quick mask, your protecting the part you select, therefore not affecting it with any ajustments. Wayne
