Hi chaps,

I was slowly unwinding my film and the film leader got sucked into the canister :(

I don't have a can opener or the film lead removal tool. Any other tool, I could use to open the film can for developing later today?

Cheers

Bottle opener works fine. Open it from the bottom (i.e. the surface with the hole in the middle, not the surface with the nub sticking out) in the dark. Be careful - it takes a bit of force, but it should open up nicely.

I normally just push my thumb into the film slot and pull the can apart - it's really soft metal and they just peel open. Other classic way is with the old bottle-openers...

If you are going to use film often it might be worth getting a film leader retrieval thingy...I've got a S/H Jessops one for £2 (IIRC) off ebay and it really works and used it quite a few times.

Use another piece of film.

Lick it wet ( tastes a bit odd but it won't poison you!), pus*** into the canister a couple of inches or so ....more if it will go.

It will adheere to the film leader inside allowing you to pull the original film out.

It's a trial and error thing which may take several attempts and you will have to try turning the spindle to locate the leader in a suitable place but it does work.

well - the leader retrieval methods you can actually do outside the bag - the leader has already been exposed when you put the film in the camera remember... but yes, the "destroy the can" methods DO need to be done in the dark bag...

Thanks chaps,

I will need to do this in a changing bag so slightly harder in that respect.

As TBY says....destroy the can then yes inside a dark bag otherwise you can retrieve the leader in daylight.

The thumb tricked worked this but it takes too much effort to load the film on the spool in the changing bag,

I might have to invest in the film retrieval device, theres one for a fiver on the ebay.

Wheech! Can't you wait until it goes dark then you can at least do it in a dark room and not have your dexterity constrained by the bag.:bang:
