I've currently got 4 x 2GB of DDR3 10700 (667MHz) and will be replacing it with 2 x 4GB of Crucial DDR3 1600Mhz Ballistix Sport Memory.

What is the best option for me:

1. Just use the 2 x 4GB 1600MHz sticks

or

2. Use the Crucial 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600Mhz Ballistix Sport Memory and leave in 2 of the DDR3 10700 (667MHz) sticks to give me 12 GB of memory but at a slower speed based on tyhe understaing it will only be as fast as the sloweast stick.

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks.

Waste of time leaving the old ones in.

Personally I'd just run the 8GB to minimise the chance of issues - but my previous Xeon build was just made up with what I had lying around and ran as 6 x 2GB DDR3-1066 and 6 x 1GB DDR3-1333 quite happily for a few years.

If you run with the old sticks in make sure you balance them so you have 1 of each type on each memory channel. The board should set things up for the slower memories timings via the SPD tables so you won't get the speed benefit of the faster stuff - you can't normally run different speeds and timings across multiple channels or slots (I would say you categorically can't, but I seem to remember it featured on some wacky board I had at work a few years back and someone will pop up to say otherwise if I do).

I'm assuming by DDR3-10700 you mean DDR3-10600/DDR3-1333.

Thanks everyone I seem to remember about not mixing different speed RAM.
