Both 600EX-RT off camera, A and B.

Initially I thought I could set A (fill) to -2/-3 and then play with B (key) until I was happy.

Everytime I took a shot it put me into an A:B ratio mode.

So far though 1:4 and 1:8 actually might be good, but it left me wondering - what if B was too bright, the ratio dims either A or B depending on which way I go - but if I want more control, how must I configure it?

I note there's a 'group c' option - I moved B to C, but A sits in it's own 'ratio' setting still.

thanks

Do you mean if you want to dim (or brighten) the whole flash exposure?

Simply FEC.

However in a static setup, I'd go manual.

Ahh FEC, thanks! I'll be on the move. Sorry I should get around to reading the manual.

Actually. my mistake - i thought you meant FEB.

FEC disappears for A and B and turns to RATIO as soon as I press the shutter.

i found the other FEC, next to the FEB :) +/-

I don't know what camera you have but on all mine one of the top panel buttons activates FEC.

Though off the top of my head I can't remember the other function of the button  and it may well be different on different cameras.

I'm controlling it via the flash.

I get these FEC options

A -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3
B -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3

But as soon as I press the shutter button it disappears and gives me

B:A ... 1:1 1:2 1:4 1:8

There is another button +/- for FEC but I think it affects both flashes.

thought it was strange that it jumped to the ratio options..

Both 600EX-RT off camera, A and B.

How are you triggering the remote 600EXs?

A typical setup is
5DII + Master (ST-E4)
2x 600EX-RT in radio mode;
or
5DII + Master (Master flash or trigger e.g. YN-622C)
2x 622C + 600EX in Optical mode.

Then, the camera's flash control menu sets the Master's operating parameters, which are transmitted to the remotes, which then conform to the camera's menu settings. So the camera and Master control the remote settings.
