Question regarding ND filters and focussing

Been reading a few articles on ND filters, and there is often reference to focussing the subject, add the filter, switch to manual focus and take the shot.

Logic being that this will stop the camera trying to autofocus after the filter is in place.

My question though (I dont have ND filters yet) is if as I have, focus is controlled by the Back Button on my camera, not the shutter button, would I still have to switch the lens to manual mode or not as surely if I dont touch the back button nothing will attempt to happen anyway will it ?

Hi, I always switch to MF before I take the shot even without a filter, it takes a couple seconds if that to switch the lens to MF.
Imagine being 20 or 30 miles from home, you take the photograph and when you get home all excited and then you see it on screen OOF!!! long drive back!!!
